‘Bitter End’ Book Review

Bitter End is a book written by Jennifer Brown. I got it from the library a few days ago and thought I would do a book review on it.

'Bitter End' book cover

Bitter End tells the story of seventeen-year-old Alex who is in her final year of high school. Alex falls for the new boy at her school, Cole, and she believes she has found her soul mate. Alex doesn’t really mind that Cole seems a little jealous of her relationship with her friends, but Alex attributes that to the fact that he loves her so much. But as the months go by, Alex can no longer ignore Cole’s cruel taunts, pinches, and increasingly violent threats. Alex struggles to find the difference between the sweet boy she fell in love with, and the boyfriend she can no longer trust, and she has to make a choice between ‘love’ and herself.

The book is written sympathetically towards Alex and her problems. The abuse that Alex goes through is written realistically, with Alex’s thoughts as she makes excuses for Cole’s behavior. The characters are made real, with details that are put in to make the story whole. At the back of the book there is information about what to do if you are ever victim to abuse. I recommend this book to anyone over twelve years of age.
